The English certificate has come at the perfect time in my academic journey. A few years ago, I started a Kinesiology degree at UQAM. However, due to the demanding nature of my hockey coaching career, it became challenging to continue the Kinesiology program full-time with my intense schedule. I decided to postpone my degree to pursue my coaching career, hoping to return to university in the future with a program that could fit my hockey schedule.
During my coaching career, I was fortunate to coach at some elite levels, including the Montreal women’s professional hockey team, the Hockey Quebec Provincial programs (U14, U15, U16, QMJHL Challenge), and the Junior AAA level with the Longueuil Collège Français hockey club, where I held both Head Coach and General Manager positions. Evolving and advancing in the hockey business can be challenging for a young coach, requiring significant sacrifices to earn the respect of peers. My three-year tenure with the Longueuil Collège Français organization gave me the opportunity to become well-known in the hockey world. We had successful seasons, culminating in a league championship in 2022. During this period, we also navigated the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic, which was a complex situation for the sports industry.
Pursuing my academic career has always been a dream of mine. It was important for me to have a Plan B, and after some research, I found the English certificate program, which seemed very interesting. I have always loved the English language, and becoming perfectly bilingual would be an asset in my career and daily life. I started my first class of the certificate during the summer semester of 2021, and now, three years later, I am graduating with my diploma in June 2024.
The English certificate personnel was crucial to my academic success. I am very thankful to Suzanne Springer (Director of the program) for helping me balance my classes with my professional schedule. She was always supportive of my dream of graduating from university, and her support during challenging times was extremely motivating and helpful. I would also like to thank all my professors throughout this journey. While I didn't often ask for accommodations, when I did, they were all very understanding of my reality.
Following my championship with the Longueuil Collège Français Junior AAA organization in May 2022, I have been coaching in the QMJHL for the past two seasons (2022-2023, 2023-2024). I was also selected for the Team Canada U17 program, where I won a gold medal at the World Championship in November 2023.
Despite my dream of reaching the professional hockey world, my biggest dream was to become a university graduate, securing myself with a Plan B in case Plan A doesn’t work out. Completing the English certificate is one of my biggest accomplishments, and I am very proud of it. It will enable me to apply for U SPORTS coaching positions, which offer great life stability if a professional hockey career is not possible.
I would recommend the program to anyone who believes it is important to push their limits while acquiring new language skills that can help achieve personal objectives. My situation is a great example of how it’s possible to align and succeed in school while maintaining a professional career.
Thank you to the UQAM English Certificate department for supporting me during this amazing journey. I will leave you with this quote that helped me reach where I am today:
